As one of the fastest growing Streptomyces species, S. rimosus is also a natural producer of the important antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC). Streptomyces genomes however are difficult to assemble due to long repeats, large extrachomosomal elements such as giant linear plasmids (GLPs), frequent rearrangements, and high GC content.

In this project three high quality genome assemblies were produced using a hybrid sequencing approach, combining short and long read NGS technologies and PFGE to isolate plasmid DNA. The full genome of the parent strain WT5260 (ATCC 1097) and the GLP of two semi-industrial progenitor strains R6-500 and M4018 are available to browse below. The antiSMASH tracks also provide predictions of secondary metabolite biosynthesis gene clusters.
